Alexey Bashkirov is a seasoned private investor with extensive experience in the global tech investment space, particularly in Southeast Asia, India, Europe. He is also the founder of Donum, a charitable foundation focused on advancing medical education and supporting healthcare professionals.
From Wall Street to Global Tech Investments
Alexey Bashkirov began his financial career at ING Barings in Moscow, where he built a strong foundation in banking and investment. He later held key roles at top-tier institutions such as Morgan Stanley, Goldman Sachs, and the strategic consulting firm McKinsey & Company. These formative years shaped his disciplined, global approach to business and investments.
In 2015, Alexey co-founded an investment fund with a mission to support industries undergoing rapid transformation. Drawing on values he refined at international firms—like transparency, accountability, and integrity—the fund quickly gained traction. It now manages over $1 billion in assets and has backed several high-growth technology ventures including Banki.ru, Algoritmica, SkyEng, College Dekho, Money View, Upgrade, and GetCourse, among others.
Philanthropy
For Alexey Bashkirov, wealth creation goes hand-in-hand with giving back. Through his private foundation Donum, he channels a portion of his success into socially impactful projects. The foundation’s flagship initiative provides scholarships for residents specializing in anesthesiology—an essential but often underfunded area of medicine. These scholarships are designed to relieve financial pressure on young doctors and allow them to focus fully on their medical training. In doing so, Donum aims to address a pressing need in healthcare system: the shortage of skilled anesthesiologists, which directly affects the quality and safety of surgical care.
Early Life, Interests, and Education
Born in Moscow, Alexey spent part of his childhood in the Netherlands and Sweden due to his father’s diplomatic work. Sports played a major role in his youth—he was especially passionate about hockey and has remained a devoted CSKA fan. He also practiced fencing, swimming, and karate during his school years.
Alexey’s career path was heavily influenced by his older brother, who began working as a trader at Citibank and served as a professional role model. Inspired by this example, Alexey Bashkirov pursued a degree in international economics at MGIMO, graduating in 1999. He later passed all levels of the CFA program and is fluent in English. Currently, he’s also studying Italian and continues to live and work in Moscow.
